Tiffany stretched her neck on each side in an attempt to relieve some of the tension. She reclined in her chair and studied the dazzling rock on her finger. What’s missing? she thought. After a while, she had it. The truth was missing—the truth that if spoken, would change her and Marlon’s relationship for good. It was a truth that she still didn’t understand and one she couldn’t rationalize. Somehow she had developed feelings for Venni, and those feelings were interrupting her and Marlon’s journey to living happily ever after.
Her 2:30 appointment cancelled, so she had an hour to burn. She called Alexis for the tenth time, hoping she would finally pick up and talk to her. She wanted her friend back. Alexis still didn’t know that Marlon proposed. Five rings, no luck. There was no point in leaving another message.
That was it. Her relationship with Venni was causing too many problems in her life and threatened to do more harm if she continued to associate with her. Though they had only formed a platonic bond, the shadow of their one experience hovered over Tiffany like bad karma. She reached for the phone again, but quickly retracted her hand. This conversation had to be face to face.
She rode the elevator to the tenth floor and rushed to Venni’s wing. As she got closer to her office, she was happy to see the open door, which meant she wasn’t busy.
“We need to tal…” Her words fell dead as she entered Venni’s office and saw Aaron sitting to her right.
He chuckled. “She’ll be back in a few minutes.”
“Oh, you’re talking to me now? The last time I saw you at Fit Club, you looked right at me and turned the other way.”
“Why do you care?”
“I don’t. It’s just—”
“You get all the attention you need from my cousin.”
“That is so old. Do you know how many times I’ve heard that rumor? And you are such a hater. How dare you go to Marlon and tell him something like that? He almost believed you.”
He leaned forward and looked into her eyes. “You can’t run game on me. I was there.” His tone made her uncomfortable.
“I’m not gonna argue with you. It’s obvious that you’re jealous. You couldn’t break me down and have your way with me, so you ran to Marlon with the fictitious story everyone else was circulating. Guess what?” She held her left hand near his face. “It didn’t work.”
The green diamond was indicative of the envy that inspired him to do such a heinous act. His ill feelings were deeply rooted, although Tiffany had nothing to do with them…at first. She was just at the right place at the wrong time.
From the time Venni moved in with Aaron and his mother when they were teenagers, they were close—like brother and sister. They hung out together, went on double dates, everything. When she started dating women after college, she became his competition. Unbeknownst to her, he felt threatened when she was around, wondering if one of his freaky bi-curious girls would find her attractive and gravitate her way.
